New hybrid creations of aubergines achieved at PGRB Buzau, Romania

Abstract
Romania holds in the Plant Genetic Resources Bank of Buzau a collection of aubergines of over 240 genotypes.
Although this vegetable is very popular in Romanian markets, Romania is deficient in terms of hybrid breeding of this species.
In order to face the current climatic changes, farmers and growers prefer F1 hybrids, being thus forced to purchase unknown hybrid creations.
The main concern is that these foreign creations do not show adaptation to RomaniaRSQUOs soil and climatic conditions, especially when this is changing from one year to another.
Therefore, research started with the aubergine core collection, with a special emphasis on old Romanian varieties and landraces.
The evaluation identified 62 genetically stable genotypes with distinct phenotypic expressiveness.
For evaluating the aubergine germplasm collection held by PGRB Buzau, the 62 studied genotypes were cultivated under a randomized complete block experimental design.
For testing the general combining ability, the 62 gene lines were subjected to intensive breeding works.
As test genitors, Danubiana and Bucurestene were used.
After 28 genotypes passed the general combining ability, they were subjected to specific combining tests.
Of these, three combinations showed superiority in terms of heterosis, showing good fruit production and resistance to the attack of the main pathogens.
The obtained hybrids: H21F1BRGV21 (Danubiana × L50), H13F1BRGV21 (Bucurestene × L28), H20F1BRGV21 (Pana corbului × L54) were tested using as a control variant the hybrid Rebeca F1. H13F1BRGV21 and H20F1BRGV21 were in first and second place with fruit weights of 590 and 572 g, outperforming the control variant Rebeca F1 in terms of total production, but H2F1BRGV21 had a lower but earlier production, which is of great interest to farmers.
During the research made at PGRB Buzau, seeds and seedlings of the newly obtained hybrids were disseminated to the interested growers and farmers, receiving positive feedback from them.
Starting with 2023, these creations will be proposed for testing and registering to ISTIS Romania.
