Crop diversity for food security: practice and policy

Crop genetic resources represent the basis of agricultural development.
They are a vast reservoir of useful genes and gene complexes that endow plants with mechanisms for adapting to changing natural and sociocultural environments.
Much of this crop diversity is found in protected areas and farmers’ fields, adapted to specific ecological conditions and/or farming practices.
The increasing importance of conserving and sustainably using these resources has been recognized in international fora, such as the Convention on Biological Diversity, leading to the development of diverse initiatives.
This paper provides an overview of recent initiatives and the role of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in providing support to governments and other stakeholders.
Given the threats to the wild and cultivated crop diversity, joint and coordinated efforts of all stakeholders involved are needed to safeguard and use these resources sustainably.
