Evaluation of tomato landraces for yield and fruit-related traits

Abstract
In recent years, an increased demand has been seen for growing landraces or local accessions with unique taste and flavour as well as adapted to specific environmental conditions.
In this regard, the local tomato gene pool in Bulgaria was studied to identify the potential of local tomato accessions as valuable initial breeding material for varietal improvement.
Twenty genotypes, originating from different regions of Bulgaria, were simultaneously phenotyped under the greenhouse and open-field conditions.
All accessions were indeterminate and big-fruited.
Based on their external fruit colour, accessions were divided in two groups: pink coloured (10 accessions) and red coloured (10 accessions). Significant differences among accessions were found for traits as fruit size, shape, number of fruits and yield plant‑1. Average fruit weight varied from 180.1 to 471.9 g in the group of red fruited genotypes and from 270.5 to 415.4 g in the group of pink fruited ones.
Fruit shape was slightly flat, round and oxheart.
Most of the accessions were multilocular with pericarp thickness between 0.5 and 0.9 cm.
Fruits were fleshy, dense, cellulose free.
Environmental conditions (greenhouse or open-field) influenced mainly the number of fruits plant‑1, while the average fruit weight remained constant.
Several accessions were selected which kept high yield under both conditions.
The description and evaluation of germplasm is important for identification of new important traits and their successful use in the breeding process.
