Fruit and berry genetic resources in Estonia

Abstract
Polli Horticultural Research Centre of Estonian University of Life Sciences maintains genetic resources of the fruit and berry crops within the Estonian national research program.
In 1945, when the research institution was founded, collecting, breeding and evaluating of fruit and berry crops began.
Since 1994, the collections of fruit and berry crops have been a part of the Estonian gene bank of cultivated plants.
The aim of the latter is collecting, conservating, evaluating and using accessions of Estonian origin or well-adapted introduced cultivars and dissemination of relevant information.
In total, there are 801 fruit and berry crop accessions in the collections comprising apple, pear, plum, sweet and sour cherry, strawberry, raspberry, blue honeysuckle, rowan, saskatoon, blackberry, black, red, white, golden currant, gooseberry, sea buckthorn, blueberry, apple and pear rootstocks. 156 cultivars and 159 selections bred in Estonia are also maintained in the collections.

In accessions, phenological observations are made on winter hardiness, disease resistance and productivity in local conditions, biochemical analyses are performed and different aspects of production and processing technology are studied.
