Effect of postharvest treatments on fruit rots of sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum)

Abstract

Lesion size on sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum) caused by common fungal pathogens was affected by the presence of wounds but not by wound type.
A hot water dip of peppers for 3 min resulted in significant reduction of lesion size with most pathogens. Penicilium expansion was tolerant of heat treatment, Botrytis cinerea and Cladosporium cladosporioides were sensitive.
The fungicide fludioxonil reduced lesion size and sporulation of all fungi.
An integrated approach that includes hot water dips and protective fungicide treatments may be necessary when disease pressure is high and conditions favorable for infection.
