Abstract
The effects of climate change, heat and CO2 increases, have been studied in cultivated plants.
These studies have focused on yield and production of row crops such as rice, wheat, maize, among others.
On the contrary, much less attention has been paid to fruits.
Despite the tremendous economic relevance of fruits worldwide, fruit physiology and quality have been little explored under increased temperatures, including important crops for Chile, such as raspberries.
White drupelet disorder (WDD)s appearance has been reported to be influenced by temperature, radiation, low humidity, rainfall, and wind among others.
Raspberries are cultivated from northern Chile to Patagonia, and 70-80% of raspberries are produced in peasant family farms.
Raspberry production in Chile is expected to increase because of the high prices in the last few years and the rise of international demand.
The impact of cultivar susceptibility and the geographical zone on the WDD appearance and quality of Heritage and Santa Catalina raspberry fruits were studied.
Raspberries were collected from five different orchards spanning the Chilean raspberry production area (north, central, and southern Chile). The fruit was hand-picked at the full red stage (commercial harvest for fresh market) during the highest temperature/radiation month.
The data showed that the WDD-affected fruit presented smaller fruit size, but no differences were found in the sugar/acid (TSS/TA) ratio or firmness. Heritage was more susceptible to developing the WDD in southern Chile, but Santa Catalina presented a higher severity of this disorder.
