Dynamic controlled atmosphere (DCA Swinglos®) for the improvement of postharvest quality of yellow-flesh kiwifruit (‘SunGold™’)

Abstract
Controlled atmosphere (CA) storage is commercially used to prolong kiwifruit postharvest life.
Recently, dynamic controlled atmosphere (DCA) has demonstrated an even greater ability to preserve fruit quality in apples.
DCA-Swinglos®, a system developed and patented by Fruit Control Equipments Srl, makes it possible to maintain extremely low O2 concentrations (<0.4%) in a stable and safe manner, thanks to automated dynamic regulation of gas flows, without inducing fermentation or hypoxic stress.
This study evaluated the effects of DCA-Swinglos® storage at different temperatures on yellow-flesh kiwifruit (‘SunGold™’) compared to CA. Two batches (L1/L2) of kiwifruit, harvested at commercial maturity, were stored under DCA-Swinglos® at 0.7 and 1°C and in CA at 1°C for 140 days.
At harvest and after 30, 90, and 140 days of storage, 20 fruits treatment‑1 were analyzed for flesh firmness, core firmness, pulp color (h°), soluble solids, titratable acidity, dry matter, and ethanol contents.
After 140 days of storage plus 7 days at 20°C, fruits underwent sensory analysis and evaluation of physiological disorders.
L1 fruits had higher soluble solids and dry matter content, lower flesh firmness, and a more yellow pulp than L2, regardless of storage conditions.
Under DCA-Swinglos® at 1°C, ethanol levels peaked but returned to normal when O2 was 0.8%. DCA-Swinglos® stored fruits had higher flesh firmness and acidity and a lower pulp h° than those stored under CA up to 90 days, with no significant temperature differences.
During shelf life, flesh and core firmness, and pulp h° decreased in both storage conditions.
After 7 days at 20°C, fruits stored in DCA-Swinglos® at 0.7°C had the highest flesh and core firmness, whereas those stored at 1°C exhibited the opposite trend.
Fruits stored under DCA-Swinglos® at 1°C were appreciated for their softness, juiciness, aroma, and balanced flavor.
No internal defects were detected.
FCE, through ongoing application tests, is obtaining results that further confirm the promising potential of DCA-Swinglos® for yellow-flesh kiwifruit (SunGold™’).
