Abstract
The use of hail nets to protect fruit from climatic adversities in Argentine main pome fruit production region is rapidly increasing.
The effects of hail nets on fruit physiology and quality at harvest are well-documented.
However, their influence on fruit postharvest performance is poorly understood.
The aim of this work was to determine influence of white/black hail nets on ‘Washington Spur’ apple physiological disorders.
Over two seasons fruit was harvested and cold stored (-0.5°C and 95% relative humidity for 150 days). We evaluated maturity at harvest (firmness, soluble solids content and titratable acidity) and superficial scald incidence and severity after 150 days of storage.
We assessed
-farnesene (AF) and conjugated trienols (CTols) monthly during cold storage.
Hail nets caused no changes in fruit quality at harvest.
After 150 days of cold storage, fruit grown with hail nets tended to show higher incidence and more severe symptoms of superficial scald.
AF content accumulated during storage and peaked in both control and hail nets grown fruit after 60 days of storage.
CTols showed a progressive increase along storage.
No association was found between treatment scald development and CTols and AF production content.
Collectively, these results show that hail nets cause no major changes in fruit quality at harvest but increase superficial scald susceptibility.
