Potential of CA storage for postharvest disinfestation of codling moth in pear: determination of most tolerant life stage

Abstract
In this research, the most cold/controlled atmosphere (CA) tolerant life stage of codling moth (Cydia pomonella (L.)) was determined by comparing the sensitivity of the different life stages (egg, L1, L2, L3, L4 and L5) that could occur in ‘Conference’ pears harvested during August in Belgium.
Two combinations of cold ULO atmosphere storage conditions were tested: 1) -1°C, 2% O2, 5% CO2; 2) -1°C, 2% O2, 10% CO2. For each cold ULO atmosphere storage condition three treatment durations were used after which the pears (survival/mortality of the codling moth life stages) were evaluated: 7, 14 and 28 days.
This study clearly shows that the younger life stages (eggs, L1, L2 and L3) are more sensitive to the cold CA treatment than the older life stages (L4 and L5). Generally, the younger life stages already reach more than 60% mortality after 1 week in storage.
In contrast, L4 and L5 instar larvae generally require at least 14 days to reach over 60% mortality.
After 4 weeks (28 days) all life stages reach 100% mortality in the -1°C, 2% O2, 10% CO2 conditions.
Also, for the -1°C, 2% O2, 5% CO2 condition generally high mortality rates are obtained for all life stages, although very few surviving larvae were still detected after 28 days.
In summary, the older larval instars L4 and L5 turn out to be the most tolerant life stages for the cold/controlled atmosphere (CA) treatment, with the latter (L5) requiring the longest period in storage to reach complete overall mortality.
Cold storage (-1°C) for minimal 28 days under controlled atmosphere with a low oxygen level (2% O2) turns out to be effective as postharvest phytosanitary measure against all stages of codling moth C. pomonella larvae (young and oldest instars) in ‘Conference’ pears, with increased efficacy rates for the higher (10% CO2) levels.
