Abstract
The new CH201/FRED® pear cultivar is characterized by a red blush, crunchy texture, and good long-term storage potential thanks to its firmness retention.
CH201/FRED® requires 7 to 10 days of shelf life to ripen and has a robust resistance to mechanical damages.
However, this cultivar is prone to develop cavities and internal browning under controlled atmosphere (CA) storage conditions.
High CO2 and low O2 concentrations, short delays before CA storage, and 1-MCP treatment have been shown to promote the development of these disorders.
A study with pears harvested from various orchards revealed that the occurrence of CA-related disorders was influenced by the origin of the fruit.
Although some orchards produced healthy pears, others showed a high incidence of the disorder.
To identify orchard-related factors, pears from various orchards were stored in the same room.
The results indicated that young or imbalanced orchards, particularly those with a high tree vigor-to-crop load ratio, were more prone to such disorders.
The number of ripe seeds correlated with reduced susceptibility to cavities and higher calcium content.
These results highlight the importance of proper orchard management on the storability of the pears, in particular the pollination quality, as it directly influences seed development, which in turn plays a pivotal role in calcium uptake and ultimately enhances the storability of pears.
