Sensitivity of ‘Fresco’ (Wellant®) and ‘SQ159’ (Magic Star®) apples to dynamic elevated CO2 concentrations in CA/ULO storage

Abstract
The effect of dynamically adjusted CO2 concentrations on the storage quality of the apple cultivars ‘Fresco’ (Wellant®) and ‘SQ159’ (Magic Star®) was evaluated.
Apples were stored at CO2 levels ranging from <0.3 to 10 kPa, with 1 kPa O2 and a temperature of 2°C. Initial fruit temperatures were set to either 5 or 18°C. Post-storage analysis showed that flesh firmness, soluble solids content, and titratable acidity of both apple cultivars were not significantly affected by the storage temperature, CO2 concentration, or the pre-storage duration under low CO2 conditions.
Moreover, no CO2-related physiological disorders were observed in ‘Fresco’ apples under any of the tested conditions.
High CO2 concentrations effectively suppressed superficial scald development. ‘SQ159’ also showed low sensitivity to CO2. Flesh browning occurred only when CO2 levels were maintained at 10 kPa from the start.
The results highlight the advantages of dynamic CO2 management compared to static levels.
Further trials with additional important cultivars are recommended to optimize storage protocols.
