Abstract
During 15 years, research has been carried out in Denmark on the development and test of a fertilization system for agricultural crops based on the chemical composition of young plants.
Initially we mainly worked with spring-sown cereals as oats, barley and wheat /3–10/. Later the system was transferred to other growth conditions as e.g. barley grown in Czechoslovakia /1/ and other agricultural crops as e.g. rice /12/.

Recently, work has been initiated for transferring the fertilization system to some horticultural crops grown in fields and under glass /2, 11, 13, 15, 16/.

Admittedly, however, the results of our work have mostly been published in agricultural periodicals and its transfer to horticultural crops has been dealt with rather fractionally and locally.
This does not agree well with the strong and growing interest in using plant analyses as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool in horticulture, which has clearly appeared during this symposium.
Therefore, I take this opportunity to outline the development of the fertilization system concerning its methods, bases and use and to note the progress made in transferring the system from agricultural to horticultural crops.
