Abstract
The agriculture of most of the socialist economies was recently characterized by a rapid mechanization.
Generally, the main field crops became fully mechanized.
However, the mechanization of most of the horticultural crops — especially harvesting operations — lagged behind that of major crops.
Generally, the main field crops became fully mechanized.
However, the mechanization of most of the horticultural crops — especially harvesting operations — lagged behind that of major crops.
In connection with the agricultural mechanization and the rapid industrial development, agricultural labour force declined significantly.
Consequently, a labour shortage occurred on large co-operative and state farms where labour-intensive production activities are carried out.
Large farms are therefore generally not interested in large-scale production of labour-intensive products.
The production of these products, such as of fresh vegetables, has to be solved in special, small-scale production arrangement.
