Abstract
The main factors involved in mutation breeding of ornamental bulb crops are discussed, viz. the genetic constitution of the starting material, the availability of a discriminative selection method, and the choice of the plant material to be treated.
Special attention is paid to the adventitious bud technique, namely the stimulation of adventitious buds on leaves or on transformed leaves, which results in a high or higher percentage of solid, non-chimeral mutants after irradiation or of solid polyploids after colchicine treatment.
