Abstract
A short account is given of a study on the polyploidy in freesia in connection with a programme of F1 seed production at the Institute of Horticultural Plant Breeding.

Progress in breeding and the origin and development of polyploidy are discussed.
The reduced fertility of the tetraploids, resulting in bad seed setting in crosses, is assumed to be correlated with the aneuploidy, which is very common in the tetraploid freesia.
