USE OF WHITE PLASTIC AS GROUND COVER FOR THE CULTURE OF GLASA IN GREENHOUSES

In greenhouse culture, polyethylene is used as ground cover.
The forcing of Glasa begins about January 10th.
As in January and February the luminous intensity is the limiting factor for the growth, such lack of light may be compensated by the use of white plastic as ground cover.

From 1968 to 1971, white plastic and black plastic have been compared.
Some conclusions may be drawn:

• The production is increased by 10% with white plastic.

• No difference is observed as regard to precocity, quality and average price.

• The gross profit was increased by 10%.

• The financial profit was by far superior to the extra costs involved by the use of white plastic.

As a result, white plastic has been adopted everywhere in the North of Campine for the culture of Glasa.
