Abstract
A litchi plot consisting of trees planted at distances of 5m x 5m (at the Volcani Center in Bet-Dagan) became overcrowded after 10 years.
Instead of thinning out the trees; we employed mechanical pruning (topping at a height of 2.5 m and hedging) combined with autumnal water stress for three consecutive years (1988–1990). We succeeded in maintaining a small-statured litchi plot, with open spaces between the trees, which produced consistently high yields (-10 tons/ha.year). consequently the feasibility of planting high-density (3m x 5m) litchi orchards is suggested.
