Abstract
A field planting comparison of Golden Delicious and Starking Delicious apple trees was carried out from 1982 to 1991 to evaluate the effects of three rootstocks, M9, M26 and MM106, and two training systems, palmette (4 x 4 m spacing) and slender spindle (3.50 x 1.75 m spacing).
On both cultivars, the highest yields were obtained with the slender spindle training system having as rootstocks M9 and M26 on Golden Delicious and M9 on Starking Delicious.
Training systems and rootstocks did not substantially influence fruit characteristics.
The trial shows the better productive efficiency of Golden Delicious and of slender spindle training system when semi-dwarfing (M26) and dwarfing (M9) rootstocks are used.
