Abstract
A continuously fertigated (N-P-K) young plantation of prickly pear (Opuntia ficus–indica) reached a height of 1.8 m and produced 18 tons/ha fruits after two-and-a-half years.
Two flushes of floral buds were produced, a major one in the spring and a minor one in the autumn.
Subsequent studies conducted in rain-fed plantations, which usually develop buds in the spring showed that fertigation with N fertilizer promoted out-of-season floral bud emergence.
