Abstract
Growing and fruiting characteristics of 8 plum varieties were studied between 1983 and 1991. Important statements are as follows:
- Spacing should be chosen according to the vigor of varieties and to local conditions.
It can vary from 6×4 m (low vigor, precocious tree, e.g.Bluefre) up to 7×5 m (vigorous and not precocious tree, e.g.
Besztercei szilva variety). - Training of young trees and pruning of mature trees depend on variety characteristics.
During the first years of the training of scaffold limbs heading-back cuts should be used in case of varieties with poor lateral branching (e.g.
Cacanska lepotica) and should not be used in case of good lateral shoot formation (e.g.
Cacanska najbolja). - Fruit thinning can be useful from the 3 rd – 4 th year, because the overproduction can stop growing, decrease fruit quality and induce alternate bearing.
