Abstract
Tree height differing from 175 to 375 cm resulted in nearly the same light interception indicating the same LAI, but yield increased with increasing tree height.
Trees higher than 325 cm produced fruit of reduced colour development for the red fruited cultivar ‘Spartan’. At a latitude of 55° a tree height of 275 to 325 cm seem to be optimal for development of fruit colour and fruit size, resulting in the highest yield of first class fruit of ‘Spartan’. For ‘Mutsu’ an optimum was not found and only for the lowest trees yield of first class fruit was reduced.
Optimal tree height may be different for different cultivars depending of the need of light for red colour development.
