Abstract
Under protected cultivation, the amount of nutrients is not a limiting factor in the mineral nutrition of vegetables.

But the uptake of water and nutrients is an active phenomenon depending on the energy present in the roots : ATP and trans-membrane electrochemical potential.
Also the root temperature, the salinity, the value of pH and the aeration of substrate are very important for an adequate nutrition of plant.

Deterioration of the soil’s physical characteristics plays a very important role and particularly on :

  • nutrient uptake

  • transport of nutrients from root to shoot

  • first steps of metabolism.
