Abstract
Increasing use of sets in the main onion producing area of Great Britain is discussed.
Establishment difficulties have been overcome as well as achieving earlier harvest in summer conditions, which has much improved quality.

Development work has evaluated many shorter day varieties in combination with heat treatment during storage and planting date to manipulate bolting percentage yield and maturity date.
