Abstract
Heavy rainfalls may result in silting up of the soil surface, eventually forming crusts at high temperatures.
To support satisfactory emergence, the soil surface should be protected from destruction of aggregates.

Results of our investigations show, that developement of crusts on silty soils can be reduced by spraying phosphoric acid over seedrows.
If rainfalls desintegrated soil aggregates, emergence will be improved by breaking the crust mechanically.
Incorporating solid materials such as vermiculite, threshed wheat, sawdust or shaving, or covering the soil surface with sand or growsorb could not save emergence of carrots.
