Abstract
The aim of harvest planning with Brussels sprouts (Brassica oleracea var. gemmifera) is to have continuity in supply of optimum quality sprouts of a preferred size grade at the optimum yield level from August to March.
The present Dutch advisory scheme for harvest planning is reviewed.
The main techniques used in harvest planning are planting of cultivars which differ in maturation time, varying the date of planting and plant density, and stopping.
Criteria for application of techniques mentioned are discussed.
A better understanding of the factors that determine the maturation time of a cultivar is needed to improve planning.
To make better use of the growing season, it should be investigated whether spread in harvest time could mainly be achieved through differences in maturation time between varieties, rather than through varying the planting date.
A definition of maturity is proposed.
Further possible improvements in planning and information supply are suggested and research needs are indicated.
