INFLUENCE OF BUD NUMBER ON GROWTH, YIELD, GRAPE AND WINE QUALITY OF ‘PINOT GRIS’, ‘PINOT NOIR’ AND ‘SAUVIGNON’ (VITIS VINIFERA L.)

Abstract
A two-year-trial was carried out on Pinot gris, Pinot noir and Sauvignon grape varieties growing in a northern-east Italian viticultural area (Collio-GO) and trained "Casarsa", in order to check the effect of two different node numbers (30 and 50 per vine) on vine physiology.
The pruning treatments affected the vegetative and yield characteristics of the cultivars, without modifying must sugar concentration, titratable acidity, pH and organic acid levels of the juice.

The vines with high node number developed a larger total leaf area than the vines with the low node number but with the same leaf to fruit ratio.
Sauvignon vines, pruned with high node number, showed the highest leaf layer number.
The wine tasting (duetrio test) showed instead that only Sauvignon wines, coming from the two pruning treatments, were recognized to be different, and the panel of tasters preferred the wine made with the high bud number grapes.
