Abstract
The diversity of the Tospovirus is a characteristics of this genus.
Only recently has it become widely recognized that this taxa contains several distinct viruses.
Although it has been recognized somewhat longer, the diversity that exists within a given virus is also unusual.
Natural populations of tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) may occur as heterogeneous complexes of distinct isolates.
It is been hypothesized that this heterogeneity provides the basis for new isolates that are capable of overcoming resistance.
We have developed a system to genetically characterize these populations through natural reassortment experiments.
Initial studies have revealed that parental phenotypes are expressed in reassortant isolates as well as new phenotypes, such as resistance-breaking strains
