Abstract
Populations of tobacco thrips (Frankliniella fusca) and western flower thrips, (F. occidentalis), which are known vectors of tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), were monitored along with spotted wilt epidemics in peanuts that had been treated with various insecticides from 1988 to 1995. Treatments comprised various systemic insecticides applied in-furrow, at-planting, as foliar sprays, or as combinations of these methods on two cultivars.
All insecticides gave good control of thrips larvae but only fair control of adults.
Most insecticides treatments had significantly more
F. occidentalis adults within 48 days after planting and during flowering.
Although incidence of spotted wilt disease was lower on variety Southern Runner than on Florunner, these reductions were not significantly different.
In all cases, the variety effect on final incidence of spotted wilt was larger than the insecticide effect.
With season-long weekly sprays, the reduction in spotted wilt was about 50%. The effects of insecticides on thrips populations and subsequent progress of disease epidemics are discussed.
