Abstract
Physical and physicochemical properties of peat, coir and peat-coir mixes (3:1, 1:1 and 1:3, v/v) and the effects of clay-material addition on peat-coir mixes were studied.
Packed Sphagnum peat and coir obtained from three consignments of the same commercial product were analyzed.
Peat variation was noticeable in relation to Air Capacity (AC) and Water Volume at 10 cm water suction.
Little variation of physical properties of coir products were detected but a harmful Electrical Conductivity (EC) and a low pH was noted in one consignment.
Peat-coir mixes showed variation in relation to consignment and mix proportions.
Air/water parameters of mixes did not follow a linear relation with those exhibited by peat and coir.
The presence of coir in mixes increased AC and decreased water volumes more than linearly.
Clay-material addition implied increases in Bulk Density, Easily Available Water, Available Water and pH; Organic Matter content, Total Pore Space, AC and EC decreased.
