Abstract
The determination of physical properties of substrates, i.e. water capacity, is getting increasingly important for the quality control for substrates as well as for the irrigation scheme during the growth period of the crops.
For non-fractionated and fractionated white and black peat the water capacity is determined with the ISHS method (modified and original), the German DIN method, and a quick method.
The methods differ in the way of saturating the substrates, in the equilibration time and negative pressure head for drainage, and in the sample height.
Compared to the modified ISHS method the water capacity is overestimated with the DIN method and underestimated with the quick method.
The procedure of saturating the substrates in the original ISHS method also influences the water capacity.
