Abstract
For optimum nutrient use efficiency, nutrient demand and supply should be synchronized.
A procedure is proposed describing the ratio of nutrient uptake to water uptake as a function of environmental conditions using models for photosynthesis and transpiration.

In a simulation study the effect of greenhouse climate on the ratio of nutrient uptake to water uptake was investigated.
Potassium uptake was selected as an example.
Calculated ratio of nutrient to water uptake was strongly affected by temperature, but less so by global radiation.
The data indicated, that nutrient solution concentration should be lowered with increasing temperature to reduce nutrient losses in open growing systems and prevent salt accumulation in closed growing systems, respectively.
