Abstract
In West Bengal about 15 cultivars are reported to grow in different districts. ‘Bombai’ is the commercial cultivar of the region but the fruit of ‘Bedana’ is superior in quality with high flesh recovery and shrivelled seeds.
The cvs.
Bombai, Early Large Red, McLean, Muzaffarpur and Rose Scented show alternate bearing tendency.
The harvesting season lasts 4-5 weeks.
The earliest cultivar is ‘Early Large Red’, fruit of which matures in the first week of May.
The fruit of ‘Bombai’ and ‘Elaichi’ are also good in quality.
Based on the productivity, ‘Bombai’ (5.94 t/ha in a tree density of 156/ha), ‘Muzaffarpur’ (5.82 t/ha) and ‘Rose Scented’ (5.55 t/ha) are considered as superior in production.
Fruit cracking is high in ‘Deshi’, ‘Early Large Red’, and ‘China’.
