Abstract
The two synthetic auxins 2,4,5-TP (as Tipimon) and 3,5,6-TPA (as Maxim) were found, in Israel, to greatly increase the yield of several litchi cultivars. 3,5,6-TPA also caused a significant increase in fruit size.
Although ‘Fei-Zi-Xiao’ and ‘Hei Ye’ are important cultivars in southwest Guangxi, China, their productivity has been inadequate.
Hence, in 1999, we conducted a trial on 3-year-old litchi trees in Hepu, Guangxi to determine the effect of these two auxins.
Trees were sprayed when fruitlet weight was ca. 2 g (the diameter at the fruitlet base ~14 mm) with 67 ppm 2,4,5-TP (0.1% Tipimon), 50 ppm 3,5,6-TPA (5 tablets of Maxim in 100 l water), or their combination (first with 2,4,5-TP and 4 days later with 3,5,6-TPA). The yield per tree of both cultivars was significantly increased, by about 200%, by all three auxin treatments: for ‘Fei Zi Xiao’ from 1.3 kg to ~3.6 kg, and for ‘Hei Ye’ from 1.0 kg to 3.1 kg, with no significant differences among the three treatments.
Fruit weight was also significantly increased in both cultivars: for ‘Fei Zi Xiao’ by ~30%, from 21.5 g to ~28 g, for all three treatments; for ‘Hei Ye’ by 20%, from 19.0 g to 22.8 g, only for the 3,5,6-TPA treatment.
In both cultivars, the red color of the ripe fruit was enhanced by 3,5,6-TPA.
