Abstract
Embryonic development is one of the important characters determining yield and quality in litchi.
There are three types of the embryo development amongst litchi cultivars: normal , abortive and partially abortive.
The present studies indicated: the characteristic differences in embryo development amongst cultivars are inheritable; the level, ratio and the balance of plant growth substances and specific enzymes play important roles in the embryo development; and that embryo development is not controlled by a single pair of alleles in the genome.
Different sites were responsible for development at different stages, with mutations resulting in abortion at different stages of embryo morphogenesis.
