Abstract
Studies were conducted to investigate the effect of Ca concentrations in fertilizer solution on the growth of and nutrient uptake by Oriental hybrid lily Casa Blanca. Tissue and soil analysis were also conducted to estimate nutritive condition of inorganic elements resulting in decreased crop growth.
The fresh weight of cut flowers in the treatments of 0, 3.0 and 4.5 mM Ca in fertilizer solution were 176.2, 187.0 and 200.9 g, respectively.
Elevating Ca concentrations in fertilizer solution from 0 to 6.0 mM resulted in increased dry weight of cut flowers.
However, higher Ca concentrations than 6.0 mM resulted in decreased dry weight.
Tissue Ca contents of the 3.0, 4.5 and 6.0 mM treatments were 2.8, 2.9 and 3.0%, respectively, indicating that tissue Ca content should be greater than 2.8% to produce high quality cut flowers.
Application of 0, 3.0, 4.5 and 6.0 mM Ca in fertilizer solution resulted in 189.9, 225.3, 337.9 and 285 mg L-1, respectively, of soil Ca concentrations at the harvesting stage.
Results indicated that it is necessary to keep Ca concentrations in the soil solution at more than 300 mg L-1 at harvesting stage to secure the maximum crop growth.
