NEW APPLE ROOTSTOCK SELECTIONS FROM THE EAST MALLING BREEDING PROGRAMME

Abstract
The breeding and selection of new rootstocks for apples continues at East Malling Research (formerly Horticultural Research International East Malling). Results of screening trials conducted over the last 15 years, some of which are still in progress, have identified several promising new rootstock clones.
Clones AR. 672-1 induced vigour similar to that produced by M.27, but with slightly better fruit size and yield efficiency.
Vigour intermediate between that achieved by M.27 and M.9 was induced by AR.486-1, AR.295-6, AR.669-1 and R.59. One new rootstock with vigour very similar to M.9, AR.680-2, showed excellent yield efficiency and induction of large fruit size.
Finally, two selections, AR.801-11 and AR.835-11, produced trees with vigour similar to that on M.26 and good yield performance.
The cumulative yields, fruit grade outs and yield efficiencies of trees on the various rootstocks are discussed.
