CYDONIA MILL. AS A PEAR ROOTSTOCK AND ITS EFFECT ON THE YOUNG PLANT QUALITY OF PEARS IN THE NURSERY

Twelve pear tree cultivars (´Conference´ and ´Boscova´ as the control cultivars and new prospective cultivars ´Amfora´, ´Bohemica´, ´Erika´, ´Dicolor´, ´Lebosca´, ´Vonka´, ´Karina´, ´Jizera´, ´Morava´ and ´Beta´) were tested for their growth characteristics and the affinity/incompatibility with quince rootstocks in the years 2001–2004. Pear varieties were ingrafted by bud grafting on the rootstocks of quince (Cydonia oblonga Mill.) (´quince MA´, ´quince MC´, ´quince Adams´, ´quince S1´, ´BA 29´ and ´K-TE-E´) and on pear seedlings used as a control rootstock.
The growth characteristics measured were grafting success (the survival percentage), one-year-old grafted plant height, one-year-old shoot diameter and rootstock frost killing tendency.
Ten plants per each rootstock-pear cultivar combination in three replications (30 plants in total) were cultivated and observed in 2001 and 2002. ´Boscova´ pear exhibited poor compatibility with quince, while good compatibility between ´Conference´ pear and quince was observed.
Thus far, the new pear cultivars Bohemica´, ´Dicolor´, ´Vonka´, ´Jizera´ and ´Morava´appear to have good compatibility with quince rootstocks.
