Abstract
Budding success and growth of ‘Heidegger’, ‘Summit’, ‘Techlovan’, ‘Lapins’, ‘Sylvia’ and ‘Regina’ sweet cherry cultivars grafted on clonal rootstocks ‘F 12/1’, ‘P-HL A’, ‘P-HL B’ and ‘GiSelA 5’ were studied during three consecutive years (2000-2002). Trees on ‘F 12/1’ were treated as a control.
Rootstocks did not have any effect on the budding success, but tree growth in the nursery was affected by rootstock.
Trees of all cultivars tested on ‘P-HL A’, ‘P-HL B’ and ‘GiSelA 5’ rootstocks were usually smaller and their trunks were thinner than the control trees on ‘F 12/1’ rootstock. ‘Heidegger’ trees on rootstocks ‘P-HL A’, ‘P-HL B’ and ‘GiSelA 5’ showed obvious symptoms of incompatibility demonstrated as leaf yellowing and growth inhibition in the middle of the growing season.
During the first year in the orchard, their mortality rate was extremely high.
However, microscopic examination of the graft union of these combinations did not show any visual dysfunction between scion and rootstock.
No particles of prune dwarf virus (PDV) or Prunus necrotic ringspot virus (PNRSV) were found in the plant material tested by ELISA. Due to physiological incompatibility, ‘P-HL A’, P-HL B’ and ‘GiSelA 5’ rootstocks cannot be recommended for ‘Heidegger’ for commercial tree production.
