DOES FOLIAR NUTRITION WITH PHOSPHORUS AND POTASSIUM LEAD TO STRESS IN APPLES?

Abstract
In 2003, we examined the influence of foliar nutrition with phosphorus and potassium compounds on photosynthesis, transpiration and leaf fluorescence in ‘Golden Delicious’ apple trees.
Measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence were performed at short intervals after foliar treatment to estimate if the applied phosphorus and potassium caused any form of stress for the plants.
The application of phosphorus and potassium (separate or in combination) had no influence on photosynthesis or transpiration of leaves.
Also, no important differences between treatments in the relation between maximal and variable fluorescence (Fv/Fm) were noted.
On the basis of this parameter, it can be assumed that the plants were not exposed to any form of stress and that PS II exhibited good photochemical efficiency.
The foliar nutrition in July did not result in stressed plants.
