CONSTRAINTS IN ADOPTION OF IMPROVED PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY OF GUAVA IN NORTHERN KARNATAKA

Abstract
Guava (Psidium guajava L.) is a delicious subtropical fruit and is becoming increasingly popular in Northern Karnataka.
Adoption of improved management practices for guava by the farmers and constraints faced by them were studied.
The major constraints were broadly classified as economical, infrastructural, agro-climatic and technological aspects.
About 60 to 90 per cent of the farmers responded in adoption of recommended package of practices like selection of suitable variety, spacing and timely inter-cultivation.
While the reverse is true in adoption of use of manures and recommended fertilizers, application of protective irrigation and timely and need based plant protection measures.
Lack of awareness, non-availability of genuine planting material, inputs like FYM, vermicompost, bio-fertilizers, micro-nutrients, non availability of labours in time, damage by pests like mealy bug, T-mosquito bug and fruit fly, diseases like dieback, fruit rot, fruit canker and leaf bronzing, marketing facility, un-aware of bahar treatment were some of the other major constraints reported by the farmers.
The growers therefore are required to be educated to follow up all the recommended production practices for guava, use of timely inputs, IPM and IDM practices which will help in increasing the productivity.
