TG SELN. 5/12 – A PROMISING GENOTYPE OF TAIWAN GUAVA FROM BANGALORE

An experiment on six-year-old open pollinated seedling progeny of Taiwan Guava was evaluated at farmer’s field of Kanakapura Road, Bangalore, India.
Out of 82 seedlings, ten seedlings were shortlisted based on attractive colour of fruit and high productivity.
Taiwan Guava plants are medium in vigour, stout and branching in habit.
Out of ten open pollinated progenies of Taiwan Guava, selection 5/12 was found better with optimum plant height, canopy spread having maximum fruit length (5.17 cm), optimum acidity (0.27%), weight of hundred seeds (0.79 g). The fruits have high ascorbic acid (224.20 mg/100 g) and anthocyanin pigment (0.03 mg/100 g). The fruits of T.G. selection 5/12 fetched highest score in the organoleptic characters like, peel colour (10.75 out of 15), pulp colour (10.70 out of 15) and taste of pulp (24.20 out of 30). Further, the overall acceptance of the fruit for organoleptic qualities was also highest (71.30 out of 100). Hence, this selection could be utilized for commercial cultivation.
