Abstract
In order to obtain true-to-type plants with maximum success percentage, an attempt was made to fix appropriate method of budding, to pinpoint the ideal period for budding and to assess the amenability of guava (Psidium guajava L.) genotypes at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Barapani, Meghalaya.
Patch and shield budding methods were tried during January to March, 2004 and 2005 in white and red flesh genotypes.
Among the methods tried, patch budding proved superior to shield budding with respect to time taken for bud-take, per cent bud sprout, sprout length and mortality in both types.
To precisely locate the suitable period for patch budding, budding was undertaken at weekly intervals from second fortnight of January to first fortnight of March.
Both types viz., white flesh (Hybrid-1, Selection-11, Allahabad Safeda and Lucknow-49) and red flesh (Selection-1, Hybrid-4,) manifested maximum response during the third week of February for various yardsticks pertaining to patch budding.
Outcome revealed outstanding performance by Hybrid-1 with minimum duration for bud-take (18.0 days), maximum bud sprout (95.0%) and highest sprout length at two months after budding (12.6 cm) and survival (90.0%) while the poor bud sprout (35.0%) was recorded from Selection-11.
