Abstract
Production of outdoor rose plants in California is centered in Kern County around the city of Wasco, with more than 1000 ha under cultivation in typical year.
Pesticide use patterns are important for understanding progress and potential targets for IPM or other pesticide reduction strategies, as well as providing background information for worker safety, and for risk assessment as urban areas expand into agricultural hinterland.
We describe Californias pesticide use reporting requirements, the reporting system, how use-reports are integrated with geographic information system technology to provide specific geolocated data in Kern County, and comment on the archival value of use-report data.
We summarize pesticide use data for outdoor rose fields for 19972004. We note kg of active ingredient per ha for major pesticide groups and note trends in applications by group and toxicity category.
We also note use of pesticides in roses as compared to pesticide use in two other major crop types.
