CONTROL OF PHACIDIOPYCNIS ROT IN ‘D’ANJOU’ PEARS

Abstract
In north-central Washington State of USA, dAnjou pears (Pyrus communis) are commonly packed shortly after harvest and stored in controlled atmosphere.
Phacidiopycnis rot (Potebniamyces pyri) is a common postharvest disease affecting dAnjou pears during storage in the region.
The fungus infects the stem and calyx of the fruit in the orchard and causes stem-end rot and calyx-end rot in storage.
A preharvest application of ziram was evaluated for control of Phacidiopycnis rot.
Fruits were inoculated with conidial suspensions of the pathogen at three weeks before harvest, treated with ziram at two weeks before harvest, harvested and stored at 0°C. In a separate experiment, fruits that were inoculated with the pathogen at three weeks before harvest were dipped in thiabendazole (TBZ) at harvest and then stored at 0°C. To evaluate the effect of timing of a postharvest TBZ treatment on stem- and calyx-end rot, the stem and calyx of fruit were inoculated in the laboratory with conidial suspensions of P. pyri and stored at 0°C in air.
Part of the inoculated fruit was dipped in TBZ at 1, 10, 20 and 30 days after inoculation and stored for up to five months at 0°C in air.
Ziram reduced disease incidence by 32 to 74%. TBZ applied as a pre-storage treatment reduced disease incidence by 95%, but TBZ applied at 30 days after the fruit were inoculated and stored at 0°C did not provide a satisfactory control.
The results suggest that a postharvest TBZ-drench treatment applied prior to storage is effective to control established infections by P. pyri, but a delayed TBZ treatment applied at packing is likely not to be effective in eradicating established infections in the stem and calyx of the fruit that have been stored for a period of time before packing.
