Abstract
The most widely used rootstocks for the nursery production of pears are still those taken from certain cultivars of pear, Pyrus communis L. and also quince, Cydonia oblonga P. Mill.
Two groups of rootstocks were used to evaluate different techniques for their vegetative propagation using hardwood cuttings.
The first group comprised pear rootstocks: ‘Pyrodwarf®’, ‘Pyroplus® (Rhenus 3)’, ‘OHxF 333’, ‘Fox 11’, the pear seedling Pyrus communis and ‘Cydomalus’ hybrids between Malus communis × Cydonia oblonga. The second group included quince rootstocks: ‘BA 29’, ‘Sydo’, ‘MA’ and ‘S1’. In the winter months of January and February, stems of 15–20 cm length were taken from these trees and cuttings were prepared in a standard manner.
Two rooting hormone treatments were used: 1% Racine (2.5% a-napthalene acetic acid) and 0.5% Rhizopon AA (2.5% indole-3-butyric acid), compared to an untreated control.
Half the treated cuttings were kept at 21°C for a period of 25–35 days, until callus formed, and the other half were kept at 5°C in a cooling box.
The rootstocks ‘Cydomalus’ and ‘Pyrodwarf®’ performed best regarding callus formation (100% of cuttings), followed by ‘Pyroplus®’ (75%) and ‘OHxF 333’ (76%). The highest overall success rates were seen in ‘Pyrodwarf®’ (94%), ‘Pyroplus®’ (69%) and ‘S1’ (67%). The poorest results were seen in ‘Sydo’, ‘Adams’ and ‘seedling of P. Communis’, and the cultivars ‘Mansan’, ‘Shinseiki’ and ‘BA 29’. The biggest problem in taking cuttings was finding a suitable growing medium to encourage good root formation.
