EVALUATION OF SELECTED OHXF PEAR ROOTSTOCKS IN THE ORCHARD

Abstract
This study was conducted at the Research and Breeding Institute of Pomology in Holovousy in order to test some new pear rootstocks under the environmental conditions of the Czech Republic.
The clonal rootstocks OHxF 69, OHxF 87, OHxF 230, OHxF 333 and standard Quince BA-29 were compared using the scion cultivars Red Bartlett, Conference and Alexander Lucas in a rootstock trial planted in the spring of 1996. The cumulative yield per tree from 1996 to 2006 with Red Bartlett was highest on OHxF 230 and lowest on OHxF 333. The best yield efficiency (kg/cm2) was on BA-29. Conference had the highest total yield and yield efficiency on OHxF 87. The lowest yield was on OHxF 333. Alexander Lucas was the most productive on OHxF 87. In the eleventh year after planting, no differences were observed in the growth vigour (indicated by trunk-cross-sectional area) among OHxF clones with the cultivar Red Bartlett. Trees on BA-29 grew significantly less.
The tree size of Conference was the largest on OHxF 69 and OHxF 230 and smallest on OHxF 333. Alexander Lucas grew strongly on OHxF 230. Small trees were observed on the rootstocks OHxF 87 and BA-29. Fruit weight was larger on BA-29 than on the OHxF rootstocks with all cultivars.
The production of suckers proved to be small with all cultivars on all of the OHxF rootstocks.
Trees grafted on BA-29 tended to sucker.
The anchorage of trees on all rootstocks was satisfactory.
OHxF 87 and BA-29 rootstocks appear to be the best (based on the present results) choices for all three cultivars concerning growth and yield.
