Abstract
Pear psylla (Cacopsylla pyri L.) occurs regularly and abundantly in Serbian pear orchards intensively treated with insecticides.
Overwintering females begin to lay eggs as early as in mid-February, and the period of oviposition usually extends into late April.
First generation larvae appear before flowering in the first half of April, causing feeding damage on young leaves and buds, while sooty moulds develops on secreted honeydew.
Apart from the immediate damage, the pest is also a vector of pear decline phytoplasma.
Over the 2004–2006 period, the efficacy of several insecticides against eggs and larvae of the first generation of C. pyri was tested in field trials at different sites in Serbia’s regions of Srem and Banat.
Using OEPP/EPPO standard methods for efficacy evaluation of plant protection products, the following insecticides were evaluated: amitraz, chlorpyrifos+cypermethrin, petroleum oil+metidathion, petroleum oil, abamectin, spirodiclofen and rapeseed oil.
The insecticides were applied at the recommended rates.
The efficacy was evaluated 5–9 and 14–20 days after the treatment.
The efficacy of the long-used conventional insecticides (chlorpyrifos+cypermethrin, petroleum oil+metidathion, amitraz) varied considerably depending on site (53–96%), while the biological insecticide abamectin demonstrated a more stable efficacy (82–95%). The oils had good efficacy of 84–89% (rapeseed oil) and 90–92% (petroleum oil). The new insecticide spirodiclofen, which achieved 92–95% efficacy in 2005, was found to be the most effective of the insecticides tested against the first generation of pear psylla.
