INTERGENERIC GRAFTING OF PEAR CULTIVARS TO THE ‘JAPONÊS’ QUINCE TREE

Abstract
In the last two decades, the Company of Agricultural Research of Minas Gerais (EPAMIG) has been studying the Japonês (Japanese) quince tree (Chaenomeles sinensis Koehne). It is outstanding for late maturing production and excellent quince marmalade when mixed with the pulp of other quinces and also for its resistance to quince leaf blight (Entomosporium maculatum). This quince is now being used in Brazil as a quince rootstock.
This is mainly on account of its high number of seeds per fruit (above 180), high seed germination and emergence (above 90% and 70%, respectively), and good levels of viable grafts as well as great affinity with fruiting quinces.
The present experiment had the objective of evaluating the possibility of using the Japonês quince as a rootstock for pear trees. Japonês quince seedlings with 90 centimeters of length and 80 millimeters at diameter (at the grafting point), produced in plastic bags with three liters capacity of substrate, were used as rootstock for five different subtropical climate pear tree cultivars [Seleta (IAC 16-28), Triunfo (IAC 16-34), Centenária (IAC 9-47), Tenra (IAC 15-20) and Primorosa (IAC 9-3)] and two types of grafting were compared (clefts and buds). The grafting was accomplished in the dormant period, and after 30 days the Triunfo, Centenária and Tenra pear buds produced more than 70% sprouting when cleft grafted.
The Triunfo produced 75% of sprouting after 30 days of the single budding method.
The length and diameter of the sprouts were evaluated 60, 90, 120 and 150 days after cleft grafting and the Seleta pear trees produced more than 21 cm of sprouting length and the pear trees budded produced very small sprouting and consequently, small diameters.
