INFLUENCE OF PLANTING MATERIALS ON GROWTH, FLOWERING AND FRUITING OF ‘SUGARLOAF’ PINEAPPLE, ANANAS COMOSUS(L) MERR.

The performance of suckers, slips and crowns was studied in the plant crop of "Sugarloaf" pineapple.
Plants derived from crowns and slips were more vigorous than those from suckers.
Crowns produced the highest number of slips followed by slips and suckers respectively.
Slips produced the highest number of suckers.

Planting material had no effect on peduncle size but it influenced crown size.
Suckers were the earliest to flower and fruit, followed by slips and crowns respectively.
Flowering and fruit matirity were most irregular and the use of flowering inducers is advocated as a means of ensuring uniform flowering and fruiting.
Planting material did not influence fruit yield, size and quality.
