Abstract
Papaya (Carica papaya L.) has become an important part of the diet in most of the tropical countries, as a breakfast fruit or as a puree in many other countries.
Area under papaya is slowly increasing for both fruit and papain extraction in India, particularly in Tamil Nadu.
Between yellow and red pulp, demand is more for the red pulped varieties for table purpose and for processing.
The dioecious types used to produce large sized fruits with more pulp recovery than the gynodioecious types.
At present, there is no red pulp dioecious papaya available for cultivation as the genes governing red pulp is recessive in nature.
A backcross generation of 9-1(D) was evolved by crossing CO.2 and red anthered male (M1R) for five generations from 2000 to 2007. In the fifth generation, the red pulp population of 9-1(D) segregated in the ratio of 4:1. The culture 9-1(D) has a potential of producing 79.5 fruits weighing 198.5 kg/tree in a cropping period of two years.
